Green Light Anomaly Analysis

Because of the number of things there are to consider with this green light anomaly, we felt it deserved its own page. We would like to preface this discussion of the anomaly by simply stating that we present these images because we don't know what they show - be it a paranormal event or some perfectly natural property of the camera. Anyone who may be able to help us identify the cause or source of this anomaly, please contact us.

The Camera: The camera that shot these images was a Canon EOS 5D DSLR with a Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 lens and a Canon 550EX Speedlite.

The Location: The third floor hallway at the Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast. The location of these photos was where a shadow had been filmed moving by a previous investigative team.

Previous and subsequent photography of the home never had anything else in the photographs that resembled this. The photographer at the time claimed to not see anything with the naked eye either. He was only seeing this anomaly on the LCD screen on the camera after the shot was taken - which was why there are so many shots of the same view.

The Images:

These first two shots show the first appearance of the anomaly on the door, as indicated by the arrow. The perspective of the shot changes ever so slightly as does the location of the anomaly. After these two shots, the photographer turned around to shoot the other end of the hallway.

This is the main series of anomalous images. The position of the photographer changes ever so slightly during the sequence because of the action of taking a picture, pulling the camera down to look at the screen, and then raising the camera again. In several of the images, there is a second green spot that is actually located on the mirror in the surrounding area of the flash reflection.

Crops of the Anomaly:

Here are some close-up views of the main segment of the anomaly. Shape and color are all consistent but the location seems to bounce around the image.

A Close-Up of the Second Light:

This is the green light that is reflected in the mirror that always shows up in the same spot. It was while looking at this image that made us start to wonder if this wasn't some product of the camera. Our first inclination was that it may be a reflection from the camera's autofocus assist mechanism. When in low light situations, like we were, the external flash on the camera fires out a light pattern to give the camera something to focus on. We thought we might be getting a reflection from this. However, in an attempt to recreate the shot in a different mirror (shown below) the autofocus assist appears as red in the reflection (as marked by the arrow).

Our second potential explanation for this is lens flare. Lens flare is defined as the scattering and reflection of light off the internal coatings of a lens so as to provide an unwanted image. Lens flare typically manifests itself as several starbursts, rings, or circles across an image. Flare occurs when the camera is pointed directly at a bright light source (as it is with the flash reflection in our image). Here is what lens flare typically looks like:

Notice the hexagonal pattern that radiates out from the sun.

We attempted to recreate this particular flare effect again. We used the same camera and flash setup and fired a large number of shots into a different mirror from a variety of angles and distances and were unable to reproduce anything that resembled the green anomaly. A Google search for "green lens flare" was unable to produce any images that resembled the ones we got. These images were shown to a number of people who work in the photographic retail industry as well as professional photographers and no one was able to conclusively determine the images cause.

Curiously, the only other time we have ever seen this flare was on a photo taken at the Lemp Mansion. Check out the image posted for this investigation.

In Conclusion: We really don't know what we have. The non-paranormal answer seems to point to some sort of flare effect. The paranormal answer is that maybe there was something with us in that hallway. The bottom line that that right now, we don't have an answer as to what caused these images, which is why we present them to the rest of the world with as much data as we can provide in hopes that maybe someone can help us find the true answer. If you would like to share any information with us, feel free to contact us.
