Lemp Mansion - 9/25/2007

Location: The Lemp Mansion, downtown St. Louis. A location that Life Magazine once considered one of the ten most haunted places in the United States. For anyone who is not familiar with the history of the Lemp family or the mansion, visit our page here for a summary.
Conditions: The investigation took place between 9:30 PM and 1:30 AM. Evening temperature was at 69 degrees. Measured relative humidity in the house was between 65% in the basement area to 46% in the Elsa Lemp suite. Moon phase was waxing gibbous, 99% full. Solar x-ray levels were normal, and the geomagnetic field was quiet.
Equipment Used: Canon 10D DSLR with a Canon 380EX Speedlite, Pentax K100D DSLR with a Pentax AF-360 FGZ Flash, two Olympus digital audio recorders, Cellsensor EMF Detector, Extech EX410 Multimeter, Radio Shack Thermometer/Hygrometer
Personal Experiences: A number of odd auditory occurrences happened over the course of the evening. There seemed to be a considerable amount of sound emanating from the ground floor bar area. Sounds that resembled plates hitting together or glass bottles clinking. On one occasion, after two investigators heard a voice that appeared to come from the area of the bar, a sound was once again heard after asking for a sign. Another sound was heard right away after requesting a sign a second time. Upon the third request for a sign, a much louder noise was heard from the same area.
All investigators present noted the smell of tobacco from the area of the hallway on the second floor. It was noted twice while passing through the area during the evening.
While one investigator was sitting in the room that was formerly William Lemp's office, they noted a feeling like their head was being pulled backwards. It took a conscious effort to keep their head at a level position.
EMF readings were all over the charts in the house. One can only suppose that the mansion's wiring is from a previous era. It was more surprising when the EMF detector was not registering a high reading than when it was. Many rooms registered a base reading of between 3 and 5 milligauss. There were several areas where standing in the middle of a room, 6 feet from the closest wall would result in a buried needle (5+ milligauss) on the EMF detector. It has been suggested that high levels of EMF can lead to feelings of uneasiness when exposed for considerable amounts of time. Could this be part of the reason why so many people report unusual feelings inside the mansion?
Results and Analysis: Analysis of one camera's photographs showed one photo of note. No other photographic anomalies were found. Two hours and forty minutes of audio analyzed from one of the digital audio recorders that was mainly being used for passive EVP revealed nothing. Audio from the second recorder yeilded a recording of the previously noted experience where tapping or knocking sounds were seemingly responding to investigators requests.
This photo was taken while on a survey of the property outside.

In the doorway is what looks eerily like the face of a man peering outside. This doorway leads directly down a flight of stairs to the lower level dining area of the mansion. This is the entryway that people use for the Lemp dinner theater.

This is an enlarged and contrast enhanced version of the "face". Is this merely a case of intricate shadows and paredolia, or is one of the Lemp family members keeping tabs on who is walking around his house?
Audio Segment:
This audio clip shows what appear to be sounds responding to the investigators presence. Two investigators heard what sounded like a voice while passing by the top of the main staircase in the house. After hearing this, the audio recorder was switched on. Almost immediately, before anyone begins talking, is the first sound recorded. 40 seconds later, another tap or knock is heard. At 53 seconds, two knocks in succession are heard. Finally, at 1:23, the final and loudest sound is heard after a request for a third sign. After hearing this final sound, the investigators went downstairs to the bar area to investigate. The audio has been enhanced slightly to make it easier to hear. The total running time of the clip is 1:25.
